  • Dr. Joe Agris

    (Director)

Dr. Joe Agris is an activist and philanthropist, especially when it comes to children's health problems and education issues. He is one of the Houston's premier cosmetic, plastic, and reconstructive surgeons, with a bustling practice in the world-famous Texas Medical Center, More recently he has also become involved with fighting the effects of the horrible abuses to which women are subjected to in the developing countries and the devastating effects of drone attacks in Pakistan and Afghanistan. 25 years ago, Dr. Joe and the late Marvin Zindler formed The Agris-Zindler Children's Foundation to deliver needed medical care to kids all over the world. A true Renaissance man, well read in the arts and sciences, Dr. Joe is a world traveler and a photographer (he took the vast majority of the photographs that appear in his book). When he's not off on a medical mission to some remote corner of the world, Dr. Joe is in Houston, Texas, tending to his practice, enjoying time with his lovely wife Terry, and planning the next project or mission. Often called Houston's "Odd Couple," the two men from very different professions joined forces to fly to countries around the world, where the disenfranchised - by virtue of their disfigurement - awaited their attention. In all, Dr. Agris calculated he had performed more than 10,000 surgeries abroad over the past three decades and has passed along his surgical knowledge and skills to thousands of medical personnel and medical students in lectures and in the operating room. When asked about his proudest moments over a lifetime of service to his fellow man, Dr. Agris said, "I think it's seeing the joy in a mother's face or the face of the grandmother. In other cultures, when you care for a child, you've brought the immediate family closer or brought distant family back together, because the families of physically imperfect children are shunned," he continued. "As a result, people with facial deformities or those with injuries or burns are kept to the back. He traveled widely to Pakistan and several other third world countries where he treated hundreds of men, women, and children who had suffered everything from crippling birth defects to burns from acid attacks, attempted "honor killings," and on rare occasions, wounds resulting from drone rocket attacks, which most people in the immediate vicinity - including scores of innocent women and children - did not survive.
